“Teaching is an artmaking endeavor,” Yemi Stembridge writes, one that requires flexibility and creativity. But its purpose is equity, “the extent to which students are effectively prepared for social and economic opportunities beyond school.” It’s a brilliant framing of the task of the teacher, and one that Stembridge reminds us requires that we see each child as “irreducibly” individual. This meditation on how we can create the bridge between artistry and equity by careful attention to our learners as individuals is worth every teacher’s time.
